How Number Portability Worked In Finland

As US wireless carriers gear up (or not, as the case may be) for local number portability they might want to look at how things went in Finland, where they just introduced local number portability a few months ago. Turns out that TeliaSonera discovered quite a bit more churn than usual, with over 20% of their customers leaving - as compared to an average rate of about 10%. This isn't a huge surprise, and while TeliaSonera did lose some customers, they didn't lose that entire 10%, suggesting much of the churn was also from other carriers to TeliaSonera. Also interesting is that TeliaSonera has taken the position which Verizon Wireless is currently taking - saying that they welcome wireless local number portability and believe that they can compete and win on such a level playing field. As evidence of that, they're already introducing newer, more consumer friendly pricing plans.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
