Angry Phillies Fan Arrested For Spams Spoofing Phillies Execs, Sports Writers
from the ah,-sports-fans dept
Philadelphia sports fans are known around the world for their notoriously bad behavior. Whether it's throwing batteries on the field to booing Santa Claus, they seem to have the part of the "bad fan" understood better than most other cities. So, I guess it's really not a huge surprise to hear that a Philadelphia Phillies fan has been arrested for spamming. However, he didn't just spam his displeasure with this year's Phillies (who, despite having a good chance, and being favored early in the season, seemed to underperform when it counted most), he hijacked computers around the world, and then used a spamming program to forge angry spam, denouncing Phillies management, and spoofed the return addresses to look as if it was coming from Phillies officials and sports writers at various Philadelphia newspapers. It's unclear from the article how they caught this guy. While we've talked about so-called "joe jobbing" (spoofing return addresses) before, this is the first time I can recall hearing it being used specifically to piss off those who were spoofed.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
