Martin Cooper On The Holy Hype Around 3G
While he's a bit biased, here's a good interview with Martin Cooper, credited as the inventor of the mobile phone, talking about how the wireless industry has consistently failed with 3G, and how they're guilty of overhyping what the technology can do. Of course, he says that it is possible to do what the wireless carriers are claiming, but it requires additional technology - such as the technology provided by his company, ArrayComm. He points out that, despite everything the carriers have been saying, their networks were still designed for voice, and they still haven't really figured out the business model for data services. While what he says definitely was true a year ago, there have been some signs more recently that a few (just a few) carriers are beginning to understand the power of data - but he's right that it will take a while for them to get anywhere near its potential.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
