Supreme Court To Review Online Porn Law Again

from the are-they-really? dept

To be honest, it's not entirely clear what the details are in this case, but the Associated Press is saying that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the latest case arguing about that the Child Online Protection Act (COPA) - which is an attempt to ban certain online porn. You may recall that the Supreme Court heard some of this case last year and said that it seemed unconstitutional to them, and sent it back to a lower court to review. A year before the Supreme Court had reviewed another part of the case and found that there's nothing wrong with using a "community standards" test to determine if something is acceptable. As the case bounces back and forth between the Supreme Court and lower courts, it's unclear what, exactly, is being argued this time. The AP report focuses mostly on the earlier rulings, and just mentions quickly that this case will focus on whether the law is too restrictive.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
