Woman Sentenced To Home Detention For Reading Other's Email
from the it's-a-crime dept
I've heard plenty of stories of people being able to intercept and read someone else's email. Now, for the first time, a judge has sentenced a woman to home detention for just such a crime. He originally planned to send her to jail, but decided she was better off at home, where she could take care of her kids. The woman had apparently been intercepting and reading emails intended for her husband's ex-wife. Her attorney suggested that there's nothing wrong with snooping through someone else's email because it was for a good reason (the woman was concerned about the welfare of her husband's kids). The judge claimed that intercepting and reading email is no different than intercepting and reading snail mail.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Snail Mail?
Sure, we've all referred to it that way for years, but never in a legal setting...
