Google Looking To Take On Amazon For Book Searching

from the stirring-the-hornet's-nest dept

After last week's announcement from Amazon that they were offering full text searches of books, many people started commenting that this was an example of how Amazon was going to be competing with Google in the future. It seems Google has taken that statement to heart. The NY Times is reporting that Google is investigating creating their own version of a full text search of books, and are talking to publishers about getting the same rights Amazon has (though, they'll face the same legal questions). As Google becomes a larger and larger planet that the tech world revolves around, they've become increasingly competitive with all of the big players in the tech world. A decade ago, the "words of wisdom" was that no business wanted to compete with IBM. More recently, no company wanted to compete with Microsoft. Now, perhaps, no company will want to compete with Google. In all cases, though, many companies don't really have a choice.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Google Doesn't Sell Books

Amazon added the full text search ostensibly to help customers find the book they want to buy. Google doesn't sell books.

      Yet.

Imagine Google passing links through to book sellers, and they take a % on each sale... So, it may help amazon by passing the sale on to them... but it might go to bn.com, powells, some small bookseller, who knows.
