Orbitz Concerned About Stolen Mailing List

from the we-didn't-mean-to-spam-you... dept

Just as we were discussing the fact that no companies are disclosing security breaches to their customers (despite the new California law), along comes Orbitz to make a liar out of us. They're saying that it appears that, somehow, their email list got into the hands of spammers. They're not sure how it happened - saying that they've contacted the FBI and are doing an internal investigation. It sounds as though someone inside at the company probably took the list and sold it - which was one of the issues discussed in our recent article about white collar spam. Even if a company officially follows its privacy policy - there's nothing to keep a disgruntled employee from taking your email and selling it to the nearest spammer.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

And I gave Orbitz one of my more exclusive e-mail addresses, since I consider them a reliable company. I wonder how much the jerk got for my name.
