All That Microsoft Buying Google Stuff

from the what's-new? dept

Ah, there goes the press again. It was pretty common knowledge that Microsoft approached Google about the potential of a buyout much earlier this year, and Google said no thanks. However, now that a single reporter from the NY Times found out about it, the press is going nuts with Microsoft wants to buy Google stories. From everything that appears to be going on (and, clearly, I have no idea about the specifics of the discussions), Microsoft has been talking with Google about a whole variety of things for many many months. Every once in a while they bring up the possibility of an acquisition, and every time Google says no. It's all part of the expected dance. I would have been more surprised if the conversations hadn't happened than I am that they did.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    google/microsoft

I am also convinced that - even if they are not actively orchestrating them - these rumors are the best to hype the company and push up the price. However, having anti-trust matters in mind, I am wondering if MS would even be allowed to scoop up google. That would give them another monopoly...

    Monopoly? I think not...

Actually, MS wouldn't have a monopoly by any means. Linux and Unix are still available for the public domain.
