Amazon Creating Virtual Petitions For DVDs Of Old

from the vote-now,-vote-often dept

Adam Barr writes "If you are sitting around waiting for your favorite TV show to be released on DVD, Amazon.com may be able to help. If you go to the listing for "Miami Vice", as an example, it informs you that the title is not currently being produced and lets you submit your email for notification if it ever is; but more interestingly, it states: "You'll also be voting for this release; we'll let the studio know how many customers are waiting for this title." So by expressing interest you are effectively signing a petition at the same time. "

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Excellent! Let's pick the worst of the worst

Maybe its the mischievous little kid in me, but that makes me want to look up the worst videos/shows in the world and "sign the petition for them". With a fake ID, naturally.

"I don't understand, Bill, we had 30,000 requests for 'The Best of Bea Arthur', but sales are in the toilet..."

    Old TV Shows on DVD

I think companies with the rights to all these TV shows are finding that there is HUGE demand for these season DVD sets but I can't help wondering why many older popular tv shows like Magnum PI aren't available but a recent tv commercial informed me that I can now get the entire first season of the Anna Nicole Smith Show on DVD. Clearly someone somewhere needs a swift kick in the head.

    No Subject Given

Personally I love the idea of my old favorites on DVD. My SO and I find that we purchase a lot more of these series (CSI, MASH, Law & Order, Simpsons etc...) than actual DVD movies. Sometimes the pricetag is a bit high (2-4 times that of a movie) but you get a full season of shows to watch WHENEVER you want, and NO commercials. I'm getting ready to cancel cable at this point.
