China Going To Take The Wait And See Approach On 3G

Confirming earlier reports that China was in no rush to pick a 3G standard, comes this report that China has no plans to issue any 3G licenses until at least 2005. While they've done some lab tests, they now want to conduct field tests as well, and believe it will take another year. Basically, the rumor is that (as many expected) the tests showed that TD-SCDMA isn't particularly good when compared to CDMA2000 or W-CDMA. If that's the case, then it certainly is better than rushing in and getting stuck with bad technology. Of course, waiting too long doesn't help anyone either - but it seems like most of the world is slowing down their plans for 3G deployments, so they might not be too far behind no matter what technology they decide to go with.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
