CNET Buys MP3.com
from the didn't-expect-that... dept
Back in July we mentioned that Vivendi Universal was desparately looking to sell of MP3.com (among other assets). Now, according to GnutellaNews, CNET has bought certain assets of MP3.com. This is a bit of a surprise, but could be a good thing. It's a bit outside of CNET's typical business lines, but not completely out of left field. Also, CNET has a history of not being evil about most of these things (they've never done pop-ups, and they don't lock up content or change URLs - and their reporting has always been some of the best in the tech world). However, it looks like CNET will be starting from scratch on this one, as the notice to subscribers says that MP3.com's servers will be wiped out, suggesting CNET just bought the domain (and possibly the subscriber list).Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
