Oh, Hey, It's Comdex Time

from the almost-forgot,-right? dept

Remember back in the days when Comdex was actually a big show worth going to? Even then, I remember people whining that it's best days were behind it. Yet, it keeps on going. This year's Comdex is getting ready to start in a greatly toned down manner - and with competition from a new rival. I'm still not sure I understand the strategy for the new Computer Digital Expo. If Comdex is a failed show, having trouble attracting people, how does it make sense to start up another, nearly identical show, at the same time? Meanwhile, all of the hot Vegas tradeshow buzz has moved out of November and into January when CES gets underway.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    I'm Going - alone

I belong to a company that used to have huge booths, entertainment, dinners, suites, you name it.

This year I am the only person going, and I am only going to check things out.

Like you said this is slowly dying and CES is taking up a lot of the slack. The death blows were not only the tech meltdown, but 9-11. That year, a lot of foreign companies (especially Japanese) STILL were not letting their employees fly to the U.S. (I ended up cancelling almost every single customer meeting). I still went and it was empty.
