SBC Offers Voice-Over-Internet Services Across U.S.
Well, if you can't beat 'em... We've discussed the disruptive threat of VoIP for traditional landline carriers, noting that a VoIP telco can simple operate much more cheaply than a classic telco. How the big boys react to threats from Skype, Vonage, and the like will vary. Sprint is knitting it's wireless group back into the parent, British Telecom is actively bundling services and providing value added services to retain its relevance, and most recently, SBC announced it will "join 'em" by offering VoIP Services Across U.S. One of the advantages of this strategy is that a wireline operator seems a more likely provider of DSL connectivity and voice services, as compared to the cable companies (at least in consumer's perception). SBC will also be able to offer the VoIP services in markets where it currently has no operation. If you feel a breeze, that's the wind of change.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
