Cingular Pulls Number Portability Publicity Stunt

Cingular spent more time and effort publicly fighting number portability than any of the other carriers, so is it any surprise that they decide to pull a nice little publicity stunt to kick off the number changing frenzy? They announced that they were the first ones to sign up a new ported customer in a carefully planned event where they had boxing champ Felix "Tito" Trinidad change his phone service to Cingular when it hit midnight in Puerto Rico. I can just imagine the Cingular PR people scouting around to find a star who they could pay to switch to their service. "Yes, that's right, ask various celebrities if they're willing to switch their phone service to Cingular..." Of course, the press release neglects to mention which Cingular competitor (who will probably be a lot better off than Cingular in terms of "won-lost" by the end of Monday) Trinidad was switching from.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
