Mapquest For Crime
from the putting-the-data-online dept
San Francisco is apparently catching up and leaping over other cities with their new mapping software that tracks the location of various crimes. They're also planning to put the system online so that everyone can use it to see what criminal activity is happening in their neighborhood. They're still debating how much information to show, but since much of it is public information already they'll probably reveal quite a bit. The system will let users "slice and dice" the data so they can view very specific areas and focus on certain types of crime. The article mentions that such information can be quite useful in solving certain crimes, but that many police officers don't use it - since they're so busy with other things. It will be interesting to see if having such information public leads to more cases of private citizens solving certain crimes (or at least coming up with the leads police need).Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Portland Oregon has had this and more for years
For example, try "NW Johnson and NW 20th" and click on "Crime".
