NYC Deadspot Map Launched

Last month we wrote about how New York City was planning to let mobile phone users report on where the cellular dead spots were around the city for each carrier. When it was first announced, I wondered how well it would work - whether people would lie, or if they'd really remember to call in. Well, as found on Gizmodo, the maps have launched. The maps don't look all that useful. First, it's not clear how many people actually participated, and if it's a fair sample. Even so, each map for each carrier is covered with so many (relatively large) dots, that it's really not at all helpful in determining where there is (or isn't) service. I've actually been in New York City the past few days, and the only thing I can report is that my phones (yes, plural) didn't work on the subway, but have been fine everywhere else.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
