File Sharing Networks Would Like The Government To Hear Their Side

from the it's-about-time dept

Last week, a group of Senators were convinced by the entertainment industry's FUD to send off a nasty letter to various P2P companies, blaming them for child pornography. The P2P companies are fighting back this week and asking for a chance to meet with the Senators to educate them on how the internet and P2P works, so that (maybe, just maybe) they'll understand the difference between a network and what happens on the network. Considering that the file sharing networks are simply a part of the internet, and there's a lot more child porn on the internet as a whole, why didn't these Senators also send nasty letters to all the companies who run various parts of the internet's infrastructure? Maybe they should just shut down the internet altogether, since it's (gasp!) possible to use it for "bad stuff."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
