Dude, You're Getting Stuck With Spyware
from the sorry-Dell dept
Submitted by John and also seen on Slashdot is the fairly insane news that Dell has told its tech support staff not to tell people about spyware removal products like Spybot Search & Destroy or Adaware - even if it's clear that the problems they're experiencing with their Dell machines are due to resource hogging spyware. Dell tech support has been told they're not even allowed to point the user towards potentially helpful resources on how to remove spyware. Dell's reasoning for this is hard to comprehend, but appears to be that removing spyware may go against some license agreements. Isn't that for the end-user who owns the computer to figure out on their own? Besides, if that's really what's causing the problem on the machine, isn't it the responsibility of Dell's tech support to suggest the proper solution? There's also an open letter to Dell asking them to reconsider their position on this matter.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Would have to disagree...
Can't agree with that. Their machines suck ass -- they'll skimp on some important part to save a nickel making the machine useless. As far as I am concerned this is yet another reason to not buy a dell.
As for making your dell machine faster, uninstalling all of the crap they pre-installed usually helps alot but Dell support probably isn't allowed to tell you to do that either...

Dell and preloaded spyware
Because it is now part of the operating system!
Check the apps running at start-up. Delete the un-needed one at a time and the hijacking goes away. Zone Alarm stops a lot of outgoing stuff that you can also research. That was my first lead to the source of the problem. All kinds of apps trying to access the internet that I had never heard of.
Viel Spass as the Germans are wont to say. ,
