Everyone's Jamming Cell Phones

from the join-the-party dept

Mobile phone signal jammers are illegal in the US, but that doesn't mean they're not used. They're apparently increasingly common, and are expected to spread quite a bit in the near future. The FCC says that using a jammer is considered "theft" of airwaves, because that spectrum has been allocated as property to a commercial entity. The writer of the article wonders, though, about "passive jamming" - such as putting up buildings made of material that block out cell phone signals. While some don't like the idea of having their signals blocked - others think it may become a lot more popular in the future, if only to have areas to "disconnect". The article points to the rise of camera phones as a "bottom up surveillance society" as a reason why we might want areas that have no signal. That makes little sense to me, since anyone using a camera phone can still snap the picture, and then just upload it later when they're in range of a signal. Still, it will be interesting to see if anti-jamming equipment becomes popular. Most people have no idea if a jammer is being used, since it just looks like there's no service. This makes it very difficult to figure out if someone is using a jammer, and means that no one's getting caught using these things right now.

Hello, I have schematics for a cell phone jammer. It is quite powerful. Through experiments, I have found that it also affects brain neurological functions. The effectiveness is inversely propotional to brain activity. Basically, if you're stupid enough to think anyone's going to mail you schematics, this gizmo will work on you. Email me for more info.

    Blocking signal is fine

To have a 'jammer' broadcasting is, at a min. an unlicensed transmitter.

But nothing says you must allow EM *INTO* where you are. In fact 1.5 years (or so) ago, a Japanese inventer created 'wood paneling' layered with metal/carbon/something else that would 'block' radio signals.

    Wood panels that block EM.

Hideo Oka at Iwate University in Morioka, Japan, worked on the wood panels that block em sinals. http://www.wirelessnewsfactor.com/perl/story/18479.html
This seems a resonable alternative to jamming for restaurants and theaters.

    Correction

"That makes little sense to me, since anyone using a camera phone can still snap the picture, and then just upload it later when they're in range of a signal."

    Mike,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the article said, "Iceberg Systems, is beta-testing a new technology that will remotely turn off the cameras in cell phones." Which should make sense because it’s the camera that is turned off and not the signal that’s blocked off.

Yep, you can get them from several on-line sources that will deliver it quickly and generically marked on the import postal disclaimer. They usually mark it,"electronic device".
When you order you should request this to simplify your receiving it.

    Cellphones at school

I work in the discipline office at a High School. Repeated Cellphone use during school accounts for 1/2 of my student suspensions. 1st offense is detention, 2nd offense is 1day suspension, 3rd offense is 2day suspension and so on. I would like to know if teachers can legally put a jammer/blocker in their classrooms. would this be considered passive blocking?

    Jamming devices

I totally agree with the article's opinion. i think that everyone needs a cell phone signal jammer during our daily life.It is usually used in those places where noises are banned or silence is needed for a moment, such as churches, mosques, libraries, movie theaters, meeting rooms, and other places. it can benefit us a lot. A friend of mine who is a teacher was once annoyed by his students texting short messages during class, and later he bought a portable cell phone jammer, then all the students were confused that their cell phones cannot receive any signals even if it was the most advanced one.my friend said he bought it from online http://www.jammerall.com , and I checked some sites about that certain item. It's so funny that I'm thinking of purchasing one as well.

R U kidding? cell phone jamming is dangerous! When I contacted the manufacturer of cell phone jammers http://www.jammer-store.com/ I was told that all types of jammers block absolutely all phone calls so you won't be able to call 911 when you need this. And that damn risky if you ask me.
