John Zuccarini Pleads Guilty Of Typosquatting Scam

from the on-the-run-no-more dept

John Zuccarini, who became famous for refusing to answer any questions in court about where he lived - and then disappearing completely, was arrested back in September after police finally tracked him down. Despite his earlier attempts to avoid being held responsible, he has now decided to enter a guilty plea for enticing children onto porn sites by typosquatting on thousands of domain names similar to popular children's destination like Disney. He's expected to get about three years in jail when sentenced. While the article doesn't talk about it, there's a lot more to this case. Authorities have been chasing after him for quite some time, but in this case, they charged him under a very new law, focused on those who register misleading domain names for porn. What I still don't understand is that the FTC fined him a while back and ordered these domains taken offline. How come that never happened and why wasn't he charged with evading the police before and ignoring the FTC's order against him? Also, the article leaves out his history of either disappearing or ignoring rulings against him. I imagine if they throw him in jail, he'll have an escort to make sure he makes it there.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
