Bicycle Based Access Points
There have been some questions about the best way to cover hard to reach areas with WiFi. Some talk about powerful long range antennas, but that doesn't necessarily work for underground locations. Well, now one person is experimenting with an interesting concept: a bicycle based WiFi access point. Yury Gitman, an artist, has created "Magicbikes" which come equipped as WiFi access points. They can either repeat and transmit a WiFi signal they picked up from somewhere else or can connect out directly using a cellular connection - all while blending right in to the landscape around them. To demonstrate the bike's power, he sent some email from the subway station at Union Square in NY last week. He had one Magicbike parked at the top of the subway stairs, and another down on the platform with him - and via the two bikes, he was connected to the world. The next part of the project is figuring out how to make the bicycle based WiFi access points work well even when they're in motion.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
