Amazon Investigated For Shipping CDs Overseas
from the black-market-Amazon dept
A friend of mine once pointed out to me that, on certain CDs that are quite difficult or expensive to get in the US, if you log in to Amazon's UK site, you can get them much cheaper. Of course, it looks like some folks in the UK do the same for getting overseas CDs and now Amazon is being investigated for breaking copyright law by shipping overseas CDs to the UK. The complaint here, is that Amazon is importing cheaper versions of CDs from Asia, undercutting local prices. While the court may very well rule against them, this is basic arbitrage that is happening on a global scale thanks to the easy exchange of both information and product across global borders. It's going to become increasingly difficult for anyone to try to sell the same exact product for different prices in different markets - no matter what the courts decide.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
