Verizon WiFi Considered A Success

The folks over at Verizon made a big splash when they announced their original plan to to turn phone booths into WiFi hotspots that could be used free by any customers of Verizon DSL. It seemed like a good idea: using current real estate to offer a free service that keeps customers happy and gives them reason not to churn. Despite some changes to the original plan, Verizon is now claiming the offering has been a big success - specifically in reducing churn among customers in Manhattan. Apparently, the rate of churn has been cut down by 2%, which more than pays for the experiment. That said, they're not making much of an effort to offer the service anywhere else - as it sounds like density questions may not make it cost effective. Still, it will be interesting to see if they create a more bundled approach with their recently announced EV-DO plans.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
