Broadband Wireless Access Is Best Wireless Investment -Unstrung Magazine

The good lads across the pond at Unstrung.com take an annual survey to determine what the best investment bets are in the wireless sector. This year, they've touched on Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) as the jewel in the rough. BWA is technology that allows DSL-like speeds over wireless connections, both mobile and fixed. BWA technologies from the likes of IPWireless, Flarion, and Navini not only can be a DSL substitute, but can also offer mobility to subscribers. To succeed, BWA technologies must first be adopted by network providers like telcos, mobile operators, and ISPs. We agree with the number one choice, feeling very bullish on BWA (it's the subject of an upcoming article I wrote for American Venture Magazine). On the over-hype side, Unstrung Fat Turkey awards were dished out to "WiFi Hotspot build-outs" (also one of our ongoing peeves), Bluetooth (hmmm, we think that one is a winner), and CDMA 2000 and 1x variants (okay, now the results just seem wrong). Unstrung correctly notes that the 1x Turkey award seems a little strange in light of the fact that the troublesome W-CDMA technology fared better.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
