Cingular Makes Formal Bid For AT&T Wireless

I hate to say it, but it's about time. We've been going through months and months (in some cases, years) of rumors about a proposed merger between Cingular and AT&T Wireless without much more than rumors. Well, the latest rumors are now saying that Cingular has made a formal offer to the board at AT&T Wireless who are considering the deal. The question is whether or not they'll accept the deal (rumored to be all cash), or if they'll see if they can start up a bidding war. The other rumors floating around are that T-Mobile and Nextel are the other players interested in jumping in and pumping up the purchase price. Nextel wouldn't make that much sense, as they use completely different technology for their network, but you never know. The only thing that seems certain is that this is not the last we're going to hear about the major US wireless carriers and plans to merge.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
