Video Gamers In Iraq

An interesting Salon article looking at the video game culture in Iraq, and how it seems to transcend the political issues among gamers on all sides of the political debate. While many are surprised that there's a thriving gaming community in Iraq, it's been there since well before the war, and they're now excited about the possibilities of getting newer (and cheaper) games and machines, so they can play popular games they've only heard about. The article briefly touches on the idea of US soldiers playing the same video games (often war games) and then invading the country, while Iraqi gamers hid from the bombs and played video games to avoid paying attention to what was happening around them.
