Carriers Targeting The Kids
No surprise here, of course, but a new study is suggesting that carriers will increasingly be targeting the "youth" market, as they're more likely to adopt new wireless data services. The article mentions Boost Mobile (ignoring the fact that it's a part of Nextel), saying that it may have an advantage over its competitors in being entirely focused on the youth market. We've made a similar point in the past, but it will be interesting to see how other carriers respond. The article also seems to ignore the fact that Sprint PCS already is using a similar strategy in doing an MVNO deal with Virgin Mobile US. That said, though, it turns out that Verizon Wireless still seems to have (by far) the largest share of the market. Of course, they are the largest US carrier already, so that has to be taken into account. At the same time, though, they have done an excellent job from early on promoting their wireless data services to the youth market.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
