Vodafone Launches 3G Mobile Service... Again

Lots and lots of press coverage this morning about Vodafone launching "the first 3G mobile service" today. It makes for a good headline, but it's really not true. First off, there are other 3G services that have launched in the past - though, I blame this more on the headline writer than Vodafone. In the details of the article, they say that this is just Vodafone's first 3G service. But even that's not really true. They launched 3G service in Germany and Italy back in December. The difference now is that it's also available throughout other parts of Europe, including Great Britain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Just like the announcement in December, this is focused on data use only, though they say they'll start pushing out handsets that work on the network in the next few weeks. Derek adds: ...and have you seen the price of these PCMCIA cards they're offering? 360 Euros (US$460) with a subsidy, or US$1,280 without!! Who is making these for Vodafone? Are they diamond-encrusted by Vertu?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
