ISP Actively Seeking Laid Off US Workers

from the not-the-end-of-the-world... dept

While everyone is worried about the offshoring trend, one discount ISP is looking to take advantage of the trend here in the US. Knowing that bigger rival Earthlink has been shutting down US call centers, upstart ISP Joi Internet is actively seeking out laid off Earthlink workers to hire in their US call centers. The company has been making a name for itself by offering insanely cheap dialup service with free tech support (all US-based, apparently), and they're finding the labor situation in the US works to their advantage. They can hire ex-Earthlink employees who can get up to speed much faster and don't need quite as much training as others.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

from the inside (former Earthlink and Joi employee): dude. Joi is quite easily one of the most evil companies in the U.S.. if someone were to call the Department of Labor and OSHA on them...they'd get shut down so fast. there are so many violations (the least of which would be ten or so terminals plugged into a single outlet, "desks" made out of two-by-fours and countertops, and a fire extinguisher porpping open the kitchen door). plus, if you're ever stupid enough to sign up, you pretty much have to file complains with the BBB to get your service cancelled. looked up Hawk Communications and Joi Internet on http://www.bbb.org .

      Re: No Subject Given

I'm a former Earthlink Employee. Aside all interior decorating. If you look up Earthlink on the BBB website, you would be suprized. When I did a search for Joi, If found 12. Hawk comm showed around 150. Here's what you get when you look for Earthlink:
      Closed Complaints
Number of complaints processed by the BBB in last 36 Months: 2061
Number of complaints processed by the BBB in last 12 months: 646

Looking at that alone, makes you wonder.

Anyone find it ironic that EarthLink has since bought Joi?
