Surfing For A New Job... On The Job

from the take-that dept

It turns out that many people are surfing internet job boards for new jobs... while they're at work. Though, the article talks to two different job sites, who suggest two totally different things about when people surf for jobs, both of them do mention times that are working hours. One site says people log on in the afternoon around 2 or 3 (gotta do something to ward off the after-lunch food coma), while the other says people log on Monday morning when they can't believe they're starting yet another week at their crappy job. The article suggests (but doesn't really back up) that these people logging on are responding to being treated badly at work, and thus point out that employers should be nicer to their employees or they'll immediately go surfing for a new job. While I agree that (generally speaking) employers should be nice to their employees, the article doesn't really do a good job showing the connection between being treated badly and surfing for a new job.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

How do they know that they are at work when surfing? They could be at home, surfing for a job on Monday morning because they are unemployed?

      How do they know?

I assume they are looking at the source IP address and determining via reverse DNS lookup that the person who's viewing the job board is at legitimatebusinessname.com and not somecheapisp.com
