Is China's TD-SCDMA Emerging From The Shadows?
China certainly likes to go it alone when it comes to wireless standards. They're pushing their own WiFi standard and for a while have been pitching TD-SCDMA as the 3G standard they'd like to see used in China, instead of either CDMA2000 or W-CDMA. While we've had plenty of stories of Chinese mobile carriers testing other 3G technology or simply ignoring TD-SCDMA, some are beginning to wonder if it's shaping up to be a real competitor, simply due to the size of the Chinese market. The article points out that TI is betting on TD-SCDMA chipsets in China while others may end up missing out on the market. Of course, if TD-SCDMA really does show signs of picking up, I'm sure others will find their way into that market fast enough.
