Court Says No Go On FCC's Telecom Rules

from the not-exactly-legal dept

Last August, the FCC punted on the question of whether or not the phone companies needed to share their lines with competitors at a discount rate, saying that it was up to the states to make their own call on that issue. This was a decision that pleased almost no one, and almost immediately prompted lawsuits from unhappy phone companies. Now, a federal court has ruled that much of the rewrite of telecom rules was illegal - but that the phone companies should not be required to allow competitors access to their networks at cut-rate prices (which was the position FCC chair Michael Powell had been pushing for in the first place). Unfortunately, the various articles on this ruling are a bit short on the (fairly important) details, so hopefully a better level of analysis will come later today or tomorrow on the potential impact of this ruling.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
