Connexion Getting Ready To Launch (Finally)

from the but-so-few-places dept

Well, after years of talking about it and running tests, it appears that Boeing's Connexion "internet in the air" service is about to launch. That's the good news. The bad news is that US air carriers still haven't jumped on board, and are sticking with their cheaper alternative (Verizon Airfone's JetConnect powered by Tenzing). Admittedly, the costs of installing Connexion are much more than Tenzing, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Connexion offers full in-flight broadband internet access at a flat fee - while Tenzing offers extremely limited, narrowband access at high toll prices. Honestly, having Connexion on board would be a huge selling point to me (and, I assume, many others). Last June, Connexion said they would soon announce a US air carrier had signed up - but no announcement has been made. I'd still guess that JetBlue is the most likely to make the effort.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
