Carriers Clinging To Outdated Business Model Ideas

In a way this is a complementary article to my post earlier about carrier stubbornness getting in the way of wireless data adoption. David Deans takes a Verizon Wireless exec to task for declaring that they must "own the customer" when it comes to wireless data services. They can try, but they'll fail. Instead of focusing on the tollbooth, they should be focusing on creating an open environment that encourages innovation in the mobile data space. That's how the so-called "killer app" will be created - and not by figuring out how to shackle down the customer in a way that forces them to open their wallet wider. Giving customers useful services will open up tremendous business models. Trying to create a "planned economy" situation in the wireless space is a doomed plan.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Owning the customer

Giving advice to carriers is nice but a waste of time. You must understand that they own the customer because they CAN own the customer. If you dont like it all you need is about 3 billion dollars to go out and build your own...I dont see any hope until wifi hits the cellular space...
