Internet Radio Will Soon Sound More Like... Regular Radio
from the here-come-the-ads dept
If you thought one of the nice things about internet radio was that you didn't have to sit through ads, we've got some bad news for you. It turns out that a bunch of online radio stations, including those from AOL, Yahoo and Live365, have teamed up in order to sell traditional-style radio advertising across all the stations. Since they've been having trouble selling regular radio ads, by teaming together (behind a company named Ronning Lipset Radio) they're hoping the combined audience can entice advertisers to give internet radio a shot. AOL and Yahoo both claim that the amount of advertising will be far less than what's found on traditional radio - but you can almost hear the silent "for now" added to the end of that sentence. In the meantime, satellite radio stations are still making a go of it without any advertising at all...Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

No Subject Given
Big-boy webcasts that used canned ads only increase the little non-commercial webcast potential audience. Thanks AOL, Yahoo and Dead365!
