Intruder Spotted Via Web Cam Across The Country

from the who-needs-an-alarm? dept

A family in Washington state who suspected that someone may have broken into their home while they were away set up a webcam the next time they went on vacation. Last week, they were in DC, and the son logged in to check the webcam and found their neighbor sitting by their computer. They had asked him to watch their cats - but not to go in the house. They called the police, who arrested the teen. He claimed he had had a fight with his parents and needed a place to stay - and since he knew the family was away he broke in. However, the police say the place was also "ransacked" with food and belongings thrown around the home. They also have images of the teen downloading porn on their computer. Who needs a burglar alarm when you can just leave your webcam on?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
