Australian Music Industry Hiding Good News About Album Sales
from the shouldn't-the-data-be-useful-for-something... dept
The funniest thing about the recording industry's struggles against file sharing was their insistence that file sharing had to be harming the industry. They simply refuse to believe anyone who says otherwise - and certainly wouldn't let anything like facts get in the way. That's probably a good part of the reason why Australia's recording industry won't admit they sold more albums last year than ever before. They will, however, trumpet the fact that sales of CD singles are down, but neglect to mention that fewer singles were released - and the various music download stores probably do take away some of the market for single sales. As intelligent business people (perhaps a stretch...), shouldn't the recording industry execs be more interested in what the data actually tells them, rather than sticking to what they've been saying all along?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
