European File Sharing Lawsuits Filed

from the copycats dept

Didn't someone in the US copyright/trademark/patent the concept of suing your target market? I would have thought the RIAA/MPAA had, but even if they have, they clearly have no problem with it being used by sister organizations around the world who prefer to shoot themselves in the foot, rather than pay attention to what their market is telling them. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), is following the RIAA's strategy and suing hundreds of file sharers across Europe (and Canada). It's unclear if there are procedural issues with these lawsuits (as happened in the US) concerning how they're identifying these users, and whether or not the lawsuits are grouped together or are being filed individually. Either way, it's showing that the US recording industry isn't alone in misunderstanding (and harming) their own target market.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
