Time To Reform The Patent System
from the minor-tweaks-or-major-overhaul dept
In an article that fits with our current poll question, Wired News takes a look at some of the questionable patents being issued these days (all of which have been mentioned here) and gets some suggestions on why the patent system is so screwed up. They also get some quotes from people at the USPTO who say that the system mostly works, and there's only a handful of bad patents that get approved. Of course, due to the incredibly difficult process of fighting against a bad patent, chances are the USPTO simply doesn't know about many of the bad patents they've tossed out there. The article explains pretty clearly just how difficult it is to fight back against a bad patent. Even the person from the USPTO says they support an easier process, but not much has been done to make that a reality.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
