Who Needs The Recording Industry Anyway?

from the routing-around-the-damage dept

Popular singer, songwriter Paul Korda has written up an article for TechNewsWorld where he talks about his utter astonishment at how easy it was record his own album at home and get it online for people to listen to. In fact, to his complete surprise, he checked in on MP3.com (before Universal sold it and shut it down) and discovered that his music was one of their top downloads. Now, clearly, such unexpected successes won't happen to everyone, but it's interesting that he's excited about getting his free music out there. He points out that, otherwise, no one ever would have heard these songs, and it could even be helping him sell his latest album.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    What about Music Promotion Industry?

Otherwise, how do no-name bands distinguish themselves from the 200 million other groups out there? There is something to the herd mentality, in which people (e.g. teens) listen to some "awesome" band just because others say it is.

Maybe by actually being GOOD for once instead of being "backed"?
