Music Sales Up In The US
from the well,-look-at-that dept
This is a whole lot of nothing, but it turns out that music sales in the US were noticeably up in the first quarter of this year. Of course, when it comes to reasons why, you get totally different interpretations from different people. Unfortunately, the RIAA believes that their "education campaign" (suing everyone) has been effective. A much more likely explanation is a combination of a few factors, mainly (a) the economy is starting to get better and (b) there were a couple of strong album releases that targeted a more diverse audience than the typical latest teeny bopper project. Having legitimate download stores probably didn't hurt matters, though, it's unclear how much it actually helped. Of course, since the RIAA is so focused on the downloading thing, this means they're going to keep on suing, despite increasing evidence that downloads don't harm industry sales.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
