Patent Reform Takes Half A Baby Step In A Forward-Like Direction
from the this-is-progress? dept
Well, I don't know if anyone could actually call it "progress," but at least it sounds like more and more people are beginning to realize that the only people who actually benefit from the current patent system is the lawyers. A conference to discuss these issues seemed to have the typical problems as people realized that (despite simplistic rhetoric) the patent system can both encourage and discourage innovation - and it's important to figure out ways to lessen the "discourage" part. The one bit of (possibly, maybe) good news is a new technology "working group" to look at the issue of technology patent reform. Of course, this pretty much guarantees a lot more red tape, arguments, and very little actual patent reform. If we really reform the patent system within a decade it will be a shocker.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

The entire system of IP in the US and the world needs a major overhaul. I would be amazed if we could fix it within the next 50 years.

But first we must conduct a " study "
Thats ok ...
Our government will allot several million dollars to conduct a study & waste several years to tell us what we already know ...
