AOL's Big Plan: Become A Me Too Portal
from the brilliant dept
Apparently, AOL's big plan to turn things around and save the company is to go back to 1998 and turn themselves into yet another "portal" so that they, too, can take advantage of the return of online advertising dollars. It's not entirely clear why anyone needs another portal or why a "me too" play is all that compelling, but it does explain AOL's recent decision to drop some of the walls from their walled garden. Still, when your grand plan to save the world is to bring your site up to date with what all your competitors did five years ago, it seems like a pretty weak strategy.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

AOL tried to be a portal already. They failed. They moved on. Now they're going to try again? Maybe that's something they learned from microsoft. You know "If no one likes your portal and web services, give your customers no other choice." Easy.
