Venture Funding On The Increase... Depending Where You Are

from the location,-location,-location dept

The latest set of venture capital numbers suggest that (as everyone has been saying) the wallets of VCs are starting to open up again as they see the IPO window widening as well. Of course, it depends on industry and location. For all the hype about biotech, VCs are realizing it may be safer to bet on software right now. Software received the most venture funds, beating out biotech, which had been the most popular target the two previous quarters. Of course, the bigger issue was location. Life wasn't so good if you were trying to raise money in Utah, Massachussetts or Texas. However, things looked much better if you were located in San Diego, Florida or Washington state. Of course, in many of these locations, just a few big investments represent the majority of the activity - so it's hard to pick out specific trends based on locations where there really isn't that much money invested on an ongoing basis.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
