FTC, Congress Fight Over Spyware
from the such-anger dept
As was expected, the FTC came out today against anti-spyware bills that have been introduced in Congress leading the bill's supporters to angrily attack the FTC officials: "You like this stuff? You're the only person in this country that wants spyware on their computer." The FTC's argument, of course, is not that they like spyware, but the fear that any definition of spyware is going to include plenty of legitimate programs as well. The problem is that no one has yet come up with a piece of legitimate software that falls under the definition discussed in various pieces of legislation. It always pays to be a bit wary of legislation like this, so I don't fault the FTC, but the reasons presented so far don't make much sense.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Yeah legitimate programs like those from mass-marketing companies who have funded some politician's re-election campaign or other.
