IPWireless Tries To Clarify PCCW Wireless Broadband

Yesterday I wrote about PCCW's wireless broadband announcement in the UK and noted that the FT mistakenly called it WiMax. Derek chimed in with more details pointing out that it's not even "pre-WiMax" but a completely different wireless standard, UMTS TDD, using technology from IPWireless. Now, IPWireless is scrambling to get the message out there that this trial is with their technology. The writer at FT definitely deserves some of the blame for simply assuming this was WiMax (especially when WiMax doesn't exist), but it seems like IPWireless should have worked with PCCW to make some sort of joint announcement. For example, yesterday's Vodafone announcement clearly focused on the fact that they were using Flarion's FLASH-OFDM technology. Since all three broadband wireless technologies are competing, the marketing aspect is going to be quite important. Having a major news publication mistake UMTS TDD for WiMax is not good for companies like IPWireless.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    WIMAX

The confusion comes from the COO of PCCW - he clearly thought the platform was 802.20 and called it such several tims. Dont blame the newspaper, but the messenger!!
