More On Craig McCaw's Wireless Broadband Plans

Business Week has picked up on the recent buzz about Craig McCaw's latest wireless efforts and has some more details about what he may be up to. No one knows for sure, but the expectation is that he's trying to build up a wireless broadband provider that offers to wholesale wireless broadband connections to ISPs (he's apparently approached Time Warner and Microsoft). He's working mainly with licensed spectrum to avoid interference issues, and believes he can can offer pretty good coverage that will result in consumers getting wireless broadband at $40 to $50/month (competitive with DSL and cable today). Of course, there are a ton of big "ifs" between all of this talk and any reality. There's also no telling what others in the industry might do between now and then to compete with such an offering. Still, the wireless broadband world may get a bit more interesting shortly.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
