Orange Plays Up 3G As Being More Secure Than WiFi
While it's mostly just been the press that's been playing the "WiFi vs. 3G" card, now Orange is picking up on all the stories about WiFi insecurity to suggest that companies would be better off just getting their employees hooked up on a 3G data account than bothering with insecure WiFi networks. Of course, as always, someone should point out that the two technologies (at least for the time being) are useful in very different circumstances (especially in an enterprise setting). Sure, 3G has wider area coverage, but it's still only been launched in a few places. Even in those places it's much slower, and many providers charge a hell of a lot more for 3G offerings than a WiFi connection - which is often free. This isn't to play down the security risks of using WiFi carelessly - but to simply say that people should ignore WiFi in favor of 3G is being misleading.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
