ARPU Rising...

A bit of news that should make wireless carriers smile. Over in the UK it turns out that people are now spending more on their mobile phones than they do on gas or electricity bills - and the ARPU (average revenue per user) is up 14% this year. Even more encouraging for carriers: those with camera phones are spending even more. This is, of course, exactly what the carriers have been hoping for - though, it remains to be seen if this trend will continue. Certainly a portion of the revenue comes from things like ringtones, which is a market that the bottom could drop out of quickly. It's still not entirely clear what other applications end-users are willing to pay for on a regular basis. However, by making more options available to users (and giving them more tools, such as camera phones) we'll soon find out what applications stick - and which people will pay for.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
