BT Going IP

from the fun-for-the-whole-family dept

BT is making plenty of news today with their plans to do a massive upgrade to their network, going from traditional PSTN to a full IP-based network. It's good to see them make this decision now, rather than wait until they were forced into it. Two interesting parts of the plan are that they will be installing fiber to the premise in new build sites and the plan to use WiMax in some undisclosed manner. The most obvious use for WiMax will be in filling in coverage gaps, but that's only a small percentage of the UK - and they insist they plan to use it in other ways as well. Just about every telecom company is realizing the writing on the wall and the need for a full IP-based network, but it's often difficult for them to put their foot down and agree to make the big switch.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
